Current Favourite Books - At 18 months

Here are 4 of my daughters's current favourite books at around age 18 months. In our family we focus on reality based books from birth to age 6 (approximately), so these are all reality based and also I have gone further here and mainly offered books that feature animals and nature that she is likely to see or have seen around her in her daily life and outings. So, things like farm animals, pets, woodland settings and everyday objects and nature.

Our book choices for this age are based on Maria Montessori's philosophy where she found that learning from reality based stories and pictures is best for children while they are in the first plane of development and their brain is still forming.

Most of these books have been bought second hand and we have kept them from when my son was this age (and one was a freebie from the library!). I have also included links to order them online, where possible.

To add a note here - my blog features affiliate links and as an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases (at no extra cost to you). Thank you for supporting Montessori Chapters!

A simple lift the flap book about Buster who is staying with his Grandma on the farm and is fetching some eggs. On each page is a simple illustration of different animals and places that they stay on the farm, with flaps that they are hiding behind. It doesn't say the name of each animal but just the noise that they make. It is a cartoon style but everything in this book is realistic. My daughter loves joining in with the 'Oh Dear!' phrase on each page.

A fun book that you sing along to the tune of 'Baa Baa Black Sheep'. This features different types of vehicles and my daughter loves pointing out the dogs and sheep on the various pages as we read it. We got this for free from our local library when my son was little, as part of their Bookstart program.

A board book featuring beautifully illustrated, realistic scenes on a farm and in nature. On each double page there is a scene along with each animal or item around the border, with its name, for readers to try to find within the scene. Currently around 18 months my daughter does not quite understand this, but she loves pointing to each animal and naming it or making its sound. I love that there is rich language featured in the book and various different types of bird and animal species to learn about, and so much to look at in each scene. This is a book that we can come back to once my daughter is a little older, for her to find each one within the scene.

It was originally published in 1997 and we bought it second hand. I can't find it online, but I have found one that looks similar and have linked it above.

A board book featuring realistic photos of children and real items like hats, teddies and toys that are flaps to reveal what is hiding underneath them. Simple, bold designs with different texture elements on each page to add a tactile dimension to the book as well. Great to learn the names of everyday items in a fun way.
